Marketing your band is always going to be a huge thing, gaining you either loads or nothing extra. The aim of the game is to get the right content to the right people, but how ?

These days social media and radio needs to be a massive part of the marketing strategy for any band spreading your songs far and wide.

Radio is a great opportunity to get new listeners in new areas, I know its not easy to get on to radio stations to get interviews or airplay......but it isn't impossible. I travelled the country side this year visiting radio presenters and DJ's on both community and commercial stations and they all say the same thing "we need CD's from new bands. Their challenge is always getting new listeners and that's where you come in :-)

I was just another guy dropping a disc off ! or was I ?

I had taken the time to get myself to their door step no matter where they were, not posted it for them to chuck in the bin. If they were going to throw this away they would have to look me in the eye. Remember that airplay can earn you money from royalties if you are registered for PPL and the tracking codes are in your discs. (need more help on this call me)

Take Morning Lane for example, they won July track of the month here on WOHOMUSIC ! I rang all my contacts in radio and said this band is going to be massive and you need to give them airtime. Within days they were on radio station all over the UK, with interviews and guest appearances in shopping centres.

Now does that sound like fun ?

Your fan base is your power ! tell the radio stations you will promote the fact that you will be on their show all over your social media and mailing list.

Zeta FM Home Grown Show Winners Party

Getting more out of your time with social media

Promoting your gigs

We always laugh when bands say to us that they organised a gig and no one turned up. When you ask them how they advertised it, they look at you as if you are barking mad…well we are but that is neither here or there.

So how can you promote it with out going overboard on the expenditure?

Well, I’m going to share a few things with you that you must agree to not share with anyone outside of your band, because if you’ve taken the time to read this you deserve the knowledge alone.

Set a budget to spend on marketing and stick to it, not a penny over. If the gig is going to earn the band £100 after expenses, you need to look at spending £50 on marketing the gig. If you can’t get posters cheap then let me know as we have a printing press.

1) Printing costs

Here is where you get your best marketing off-line, but KISS your printing (Keep It Short Simple). Black text white paper, newspapers work for a reason they are simple for the brain to process. A3 posters are what we push our bands to have to promote themselves in another town. Use your Street Team to help get these out, go in to local shops ask can you put one up in their window or staff notice boards. Hospitals are a great place to put up posters, as there are notice boards everywhere. Lamp posts are an easy target, but please be careful as some councils will fine you for littering, so check first. Keep the text simple, Band Name, Venue, Time, Cost, and keep graphics to a minimum.

2) Hit the local radio station

Hit them with everything you have, phone them, text them, post them a flyer or poster, send them an email, follow them on facebook, just do whatever it takes until they say yes. Again, keep the info that you send them simple, and keep the text simple, Band Name, Venue, Time, Cost.

If you have the time and cheek go and busk in the High Street, the worst that can happen is that you will get moved on. Note of caution…..The Lullabys did this in the new shopping centre in Bury St Edmunds, got chucked out. However, they did film it all and posted it on Youtube where the local press picked up on the story. The shopping centre were so embarrassed in the story they invited then back to do a full gig on a lorry, full PA and 600 people. Never work…..!

3) Social media

These days we all have various social media sites with thousands of follows…..so use them. Push it for all its worth and don’t be shy, they are your friends and fans and if they don’t like it they can leave. So facebook it, Myspace it, Tweet it, but most of all just do it!!!

4) Newsletters

If you haven’t already done so print yourself an info collecting sheet to take to gigs to get peoples details, you need to get the following details, Name, Town, Email and Mobile number (I will tell you why you need all those things in the future). Now every month make sure that you email a gig list and update of where the band is and what it’s up to.

In summary girls and guys shout from the roof tops, be they on-line or off.

Street Teams

Hi all, I thought I would write today about Street Teams !

Well I already hear you asking what on earth is a Street Team ......well here goes.

A Street Team is a dedicated team of your fans who are headed by one very forward thinking individual. That may be you, a manager or even someone that you know that is used to marketing things.

Now what you have to understand here is that they are an unpaid army of workers that will promote you at every opportunity they get. Be it on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter or just good old face to face. These are the fans that come see you play rain or shine, they just want to be part of the whole bands life without being in the band.

And here is what you need them to do and why ! Whatever you buy in life you are more likely to buy it if you are personally recommended to do so. Like a new restaurant that opens, if you received a flyer to go, would you? But if a friend says "wow that food was amazing you should try it", then you probably would at some point. So they need to tell their friends how great you are rather than you telling them. Here are just a few things they can do to free up your time.

Facebook - Post status updates about attending gigs.

Write posts or notes to say what a great time they had at your last gig.

Post links to your website, Myspace, Twitter or other social media sites you have.
Suggest their friends to your fan page.

Comment on your posts with positive comments.

Upload pictures they have taken at gigs.

Chat about you.

Myspace - Write blogs to say what a great time they had at your last gig.

Comment on your blogs and leave you kudos.

Visit your site everyday to help increase your profile views.

Listen to your tracks to help get track plays up.

Twitter - Retweet your posts.

Tweet about you including web links to what ever site you are pushing the hardest.

Suggest to their followers to follow you.

Face to Face - You need to give your Street Team the tools to do the job for you, you may want to arm them with!

Flyers of up and coming gig dates.

Business cards to help get bookings and drive website traffic.

Speak about you positively all the time.

Wear your promotional T-Shirts when they are out.

So go on ask me......why will they do all this for nothing, well frankly they shouldn't and I would suggest to you this. Anything you want them to give away or wear you pay for, if you have a ticket only gig drop them a free ticket every now and again. Leak press releases to them first so they feel important and that you think of them first.

OK so here is the big important part.......DO IT, go on CRACK ON!

You need to lead the Street Team and they will grow your fan base and exposure for you.

Getting ahead in the music business

Hi, we thought we would start our blog and give you some daily info about how simple things can take you, as a band or artist to the next level.....FAST!

So you want more fans, more traffic and more song plays, well how do you get it?

Firstly, you need to target the people you want to listen to your music!

Why? Well they are the ones who follow you, turn up at your gigs and buy your tracks.

Secondly, you need to get people moving round among all your social sites, traffic builds traffic and speed as it moves round the social networking sites.

Now, if you have a Facebook Fan Page with some good content....and I mean good content like notes, pictures, videos and lots of posts. Then push the fact through that fan-base that you have tracks to listen to on your Myspace. You may even put the lyrics to your songs up as notes or blogs on any of your sites with a link to your other sites.

Always post fresh news so the fans get it first, you might want to tell them you are of to the recording studio, the designers or a gig.....but keep those fans posted at every turn of your working day. Ok well go on then get on with it, its up to you now, not us, take some action.
